What is  "Quiz"?

All "Ds" meet at 4:30 on Sunday, Dec. 4th at Peggi's house

The purpose of Pony Club is to teach children about horsemanship, not just riding.  In order to consider yourself a good "horseperson", you must be familiar with the guidelines for feeding, shoeing, and care of your pony, plus be able to recognize illness or signs of improper care on your part.  Pony Club Quiz is a horse-related "quiz bowl" contest designed to encourage the study of these subjects.  Not only do participants learn what they need to know about horse care, but they also are exposed to many subjects that are required knowledge in order to attain "C" and up ratings - fox hunting terminology, rules for Pony Club Games, blacksmith tools, etc.  Instead of having to cram for the written test at Rally, “Quiz Kids” are already well prepared.  If you have just joined Pony Club, this best way to make friends and learn what this is all about.

            The sites for the competitions vary around the Mid-South region. There is a banquet after the competition where the ribbons are given out, usually followed by swimming and/or dancing with a DJ in the ballroom. The cost to you for the competition will be approximately $50-60, which includes dinner for the child.  Additional tickets for dinner have been $20-30 apiece - eating with the kids at the awards banquet is optional for the family. Pony Club gets a rate at a local hotel.

             I am having an organizational meeting for the "Ds" at my house on Sunday, Dec. 4th at 4:30 for about an hour.  We will take a vote as to which day of the week is best for each level of the Ds - all meetings will be from 4:30-6:00 PM on a weeknight.  The first four kids to sign up in each rating level/age group will be guaranteed a spot on that CBPC team, while later sign-ups may have to go on a composite team with another club, depending on the numbers. I think this is the only fair way to handle this issue.  All "Cs" meet together at another location - info on that later.  Note: I recommend that new members who are interested in Quiz wait to test up to their possible riding level until we have discussed it because there is a lot of information to learn at the lower levels - call me with questions about that before you take your test or I can move you up to a higher group if that is indicated after we start the meetings.

 ****Even if you decide not to compete at Quiz, ALL our kids are encouraged to come to any or all of the meetings - just call for the times for your ratings.

 Approximate cost of study materials:

            D1 & D2 = $17 for a D Manual; D3-Cs = add $17 for the C Manual;

C2 & up = add $23 for the B/A Manual plus $15 for Understanding Lameness.

The Club pays for the copying costs of the other study materials.

            Children need their own books for the study sessions – sharing doesn’t work well.

 Divisions are as follows (PC age is as of Jan. 1st):

            D1  - Under 10            D1  - 10-12 yrs.           D2/D3  - Under 13

            Senior Ds   - 13 years old & up for all Ds, including D1s

Jr. Cs  - Under 14        Sr. C/Bs  - 15 years old & up

Alumni News

As many of you recall, our DC prior to Sarah Cox was Donna Iezzi.  Her daughter, Cathy, graduated from Covered Bridge as a "B" in 2002.  She went to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, graduated with an engineering degree, then joined the Army and graduated as the top cadet in her class that year.  She is a Black Hawk helicopter pilot and was just deployed to Iraq for a year. Any of you who would like to send her little notes or pictures of your ponies or anything at all, I'm sure it would be a welcome treat.  Her email is c.iezzi@us.army.mil

Graduating Member

Katie Bindner will be graduating from Pony Club this year with a C-3 rating.  She went to Quiz and Rally every year from 1993-1999.  Her team won first place at Know Down (now known as Quiz) for five years in a row, with Katie finishing 1st individually twice.  Her Rally teams won at the D2 and D3 levels, taking first in Horse Management both times.  She taught at Rally Camp and went to Rally as a C1 advisor after she stopped riding in order to concentrate on her high school soccer, subsequently winning a soccer scholarship to the University of Mississippi.  She is currently a senior at University of Kentucky, majoring in English.  We are presenting her with an engraved julep cup, the Joy Bennett Award, at our Annual Awards Banquet on December 11.
